World In Union

Mark

We’re in the middle of the Rugby World Cup and this afternoon Scotland beat Japan 45-10 at Kingsholm. I’ve decided therefore to play the official theme of the Rugby World Cup, World In Union, written by Charlie Skarbek to a theme from the Jupiter movement of Holst’s The Planets suite.

This song has been recorded by many artists for subsequent tournaments including Ladysmith Black Mambazo and P J Powers for the 1995 tournament in South Africa, Bryn Terfel and Shirley Bassey for the 1999 tournament in England, France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and Hayley Westenra for the 2011 tournament in New Zealand.

I hope you enjoy my rendition! If it’s your first time on the site, find out more about the 365 Songs project or see all of my September songs here.

Soldiers
22 Sep 2015 2015, Music 1980s, A major, Abba, F minor, September 0

Soldiers

Mark

Today’s song is ABBA’s Soldiers from The Visitors album, dating from 1981. It’s one of only a few 3/4 ABBA songs, and it reflects on the fact that society does not recognise the work of the military who “write the songs […] and sing the songs that you and I won’t sing”.

Little House

Mark

Today I’m playing a beautiful song written by actress Amanda Seyfried called Little House. It was included in the soundtrack of the movie Dear John in which she starred.

I hope you enjoy my version of this song. If it’s your first time on the site, find out more about the 365 Songs project or see all of my September songs here.

I Try
20 Sep 2015 2015, Music 1990s, Ben Taylor, D major, Macy Gray, September 0

I Try

Mark

Today’s song is I Try by Macy Gray. Released in September 1999, it topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, reached number 5 in the US, and number 6 in the UK. Like yesterday’s song, it’s actually Ben Taylor’s version which reminded me of this song.

I hope you enjoy my version. If it’s your first time on the site, find out more about the 365 Songs project or see all of my September songs here.

You Belong To Me
19 Sep 2015 2015, Music 1950s, B flat major, Ben Taylor, September, standards 0

You Belong To Me

Mark

This beautiful song dates from 1952 when it was first recorded by Sue Thompson and soon after by Patti Page. You Belong To Me has subsequently been recorded by many artists, including Michael Bublé, Carla Bruni, Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis, Vonda Shepherd and Rod Stewart. It’s actually Ben Taylor’s version which I’ve been listening to recently which made me decide to play the song today.

I Just Called To Say I Love You

I Just Called To Say I Love You

Mark

This week I watched the brilliant Carpool Karaoke segment from The Late Late Show in which James Corden is joined by Stevie Wonder. Stevie sings I Just Called To Say I Love You – or more correctly “I just called to say he loves you” – to Corden’s wife over the phone. I thought I’d play this 1984 classic today and I hope you enjoy it!

Here’s the full sketch if you’ve not yet seen it.

Theme from The Avengers

Mark

Today’s tune is the theme from 2012 movie Avengers Assemble / The Avengers. The soundtrack for this film was written by renowned soundtrack composer Alan Silvestri whose work for countless films has been recognised for decades. This piece was chosen by my son who celebrates his 11th birthday today.

(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay

(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay

Mark

I’m running a bit late with today’s song as I’m just back from eight days of filming in the south of Spain. (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay was released in 1968 shortly after Otis Redding died, and became the first posthumous single to top the charts in the US.

A Kind of Magic
14 Sep 2015 2015, Music 1980s, A major, Queen, rock, September 0

A Kind of Magic

Mark

Today’s song is the wonderful Queen song A Kind of Magic dating from 1986. Written by the band’s drummer, Roger Taylor, the song was used in the film Highlander and remains one of the most well-known – and well-loved – Queen songs.

I’ve given this song a bit of a special treatment in honour of a wonderful person whose 60th birthday would have been today.
