Ironic

Ironic

Mark

Today’s song is Alanis Morissette’s Ironic from 1996. There has been much controversy about this song, mostly relating to the definition of the word “ironic”! Indeed, comedian Ed Byrne commented: “the only ironic thing about that song is it’s called ‘Ironic’ and it’s written by a woman who doesn’t know what irony is. That’s quite ironic.” Weird Al Yankovic also made reference to the song claiming that real irony is a fire engine on fire, not “rain on your wedding day”! Regardless, the song was a huge success, topping the charts in the US and Canada, and was awarded the Juno Award for Single of the Year, received two Grammy nominations and six MTV Awards, of which it won three.

Red and Black

Red and Black

Mark

The Les Misérables film is being shown on UK TV for the first time tonight so I thought I’d play something from the show. I played a number of songs from Les Mis in 2010, some of which are on my Curtain Up collection, and earlier this year I played the new song from the film, Suddenly.

Red and Black is an interesting song. The student revolutionaries have formed themselves into an organisation called “La Société des Amis de l’ABC” and the café where they meet is referred to as the ABC Café (although in the original book it’s called the Café Musain). When said in French the letters ABC sound something like “ah-bay-say” which is a play on the word abaissé, meaning oppressed, so the students are “the friends of the oppressed”.

The students are meeting to plan the June Rebellion and their meeting is interrupted by the arrival of Marius who ruins the serious atmosphere with his tales of his newfound love, Cosette. For Marius red represents “his soul on fire” and “the colour of desire”, and black is “my world when she’s not there” and “the colour of despair”. For the rest of the students red is “the blood of angry men” and “a world about to dawn”, while black is “the dark of ages past” and “the night that ends at last”.

I hope you enjoy my performance of this song. To hear more August songs, click here. If it’s your first time on the site, find out more about why I’m trying to record a piano tune every day here.

All I Want Is You
22 Aug 2015 2015, Music 1980s, A flat major, August, rock, U2 0

All I Want Is You

Mark

Today I’m playing the brilliant U2 song All I Want Is You. I’ve always loved this song and think it’s beautiful in its simplicity. The arrangement of the original is of course far from simplistic and it’s stunningly powerful as it continues on for six and half minutes with dissonant chords and the pounding rhythm. With just a piano at my disposal my arrangement is a bit more minimal, but I hope you enjoy this nonetheless. For the original, watch this video of the band performing it live in Milan, or as an alternative enjoy this Bellefire cover.

Mandy

Mandy

Mark

Today’s song is Barry Manilow’s Mandy, dating from 1974. This song was actually previously recorded as Brandy by Scott English in 1971, but it didn’t really find fame until Manilow’s recording. Since then it has been covered by Johnny Mathis, by Kai Hyttenen in Finnish (as “Leena“), by Karel Gott in Czech (as “Jsou svátky“) and by Westlife in 2005.

On The Turning Away

On The Turning Away

Mark

From 1991-1992 I spent a year working as a language assistant in Menton, France and I remember Pink Floyd’s On The Turning Away being studied by one of my English classes. Both musically and lyrically it’s a haunting song, and I’ve tried to convey that in my arrangement. It dates from 1987 (further proof!) and was first featured on the album A Momentary Lapse of Reason.

I Will Survive
19 Aug 2015 2015, Music 1970s, A minor, August, disco, Gloria Gaynor 0

I Will Survive

Mark

School began again today for our children and this week most of my teacher friends have returned to the classroom, so I thought I Will Survive was a suitable song to play and dedicate to both students and teachers as they begin a new session!

Gloria Gaynor’s disco classic I Will Survive was first released in 1978 and has since been covered countless times. The strings interlude was also used in Robbie Williams Supreme which I played last month.

This song is also dedicated to my (teaching) friend Tess Watson with whom I worked in a previous life, and on whose wonderful granny’s piano I played this many years ago, accompanied by the inimitable Derek Watson on falsetto vocals as far as I remember!

Petite Fleur

Petite Fleur

Mark

Today I’m playing the instrumental tune Petite Fleur, written by Sidney Bechet in 1952. I was reminded of this piece when I heard it performed in an episode of Mad Men recently. I hope you enjoy my version.

Rocket Man
17 Aug 2015 2015, Music 1970s, August, B flat major, Elton John, pop 0

Rocket Man

Mark

Today I’m playing Elton John’s classic Rocket Man which was released 6 days before I was born, on 14 April 1972. It tells the story of an astronaut not so much as a hero, but as an every day character who misses his family while travelling hundreds of miles above the earth. Elton John performed this song at the launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1998.

The Way You Make Me Feel
16 Aug 2015 2015, Music 1980s, 1987, August, D major, Michael Jackson, pop 0

The Way You Make Me Feel

Mark

Today’s song is the 1987 (the greatest musical year of the 80s!) Michael Jackson classic, The Way You Make Me Feel. I’ve slowed it down a bit and (hopefully successfully!) given it a bit more bluesy feel. This song came to mind this week as I read an article about a Peruvian girl who was a contestant on the Peruvian equivalent of The Voice. She has become something of an internet sensation as she has released a version of this song in Quechua, the language of the Inca. A very talented young lady, and quite a clever idea, even if she’s not actually a Quechua speaker herself!

Theme from Blake’s 7

Theme from Blake’s 7

Mark

Here’s a bit of a blast from the past as today’s tune: it’s the Theme from the BBC science fiction series Blake’s 7. The theme was written by Australian composer Dudley Simpson who also worked on incidental music for Doctor Who. I hope this brings back memories for fellow late 70s / early 80s children!
