One Man, One Woman

Mark

For song 39:365 I’m returning to ABBA and the song One Man, One Woman from ABBA: The Album. I’ve always thought this was one of the best ABBA songs with a great Eagles-style guitar parts. Obviously there’s no guitar in my piano version, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!

Seasons of Love

Mark

Moving on to song 38:365 and I’m playing Seasons of Love from the musical Rent. This takes me back to many concerts with Mearns Castle High School choir when this was one of our favourite songs to perform.

Fragile
6 Feb 2017 2010, 2017 1980s, 1987, E minor, Sting 0

Fragile

Mark

Song 37:365 is my version of Fragile by Sting, dating from (my favourite musical year) 1987. I remember hearing this first in the Portuguese version on the EP Nada Como El Sol, and then discovering the English version. Fragile is a tribute to an American civil engineer who was killed by the Contras while working on a hydroelectric project in Nicaragua. It was also poignantly used to open Sting’s concert at the Bataclan in Paris when it reopened one year after the 2015 terror attacks.

I hope you enjoy my piano version. There’s more Sting here, and if it’s your first time on the site, find out more about why I’m trying to record a piano tune every day here.

When I Fall in Love
5 Feb 2017 2010, 2017 1950s, D flat major, Nat King Cole, standards 0

When I Fall in Love

Mark

Song 36:365 is When I Fall in Love, written by Victor Young and Edward Heyman in 1952 in the film One Minute to Zero. The first hit version was recorded by Doris Day in 1952, but perhaps the most famous version is Nat King Cole’s 1956 recording. In 1996 Nat King Cole’s daughter recorded a “duet” with her late father, using his original recording. This won the 1996 Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

There are more Nat King Cole songs here in my collection, and if its your first time on the site, find out more about why I’m playing a song a day here.

Somewhere
4 Feb 2017 2010, 2017 Bernstein, E flat major, musicals, show tunes, Sondheim, songs from the shows, West Side Story 0

Somewhere

Mark

For song 35:365 I’m playing Somewhere from the 1957 Bernstein and Sondheim musical West Side Story. There are themes in this song from the slow movement of Beethoven’s Emperor Piano Concerto and from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. In addition to featuring in cast recordings of the musical over the years, Somewhere has also been covered by many artists including Barbara Streisand, The Supremes and The Pet Shop Boys.

Another Suitcase in Another Hall
3 Feb 2017 2010, 2017 Andrew Lloyd Webber, B major, Evita, musicals, show tunes, songs from shows 0

Another Suitcase in Another Hall

Mark

Song 34:365 is another song from a show, this time Another Suitcase in Another Hall from the musical Evita by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. It was recorded in 1976 by Barbara Dickson for the Evita concept album. In the show it is performed by the mistress of Eva Perón’s husband when she is thrown out on the streets by Eva. In the 1996 film, however, the song is performed by Eva herself, played by Madonna, as she ends her relationship with Agustín Magaldi in an attempt to improve her life and prospects.

I hope you enjoy my performance. There’s more Andrew Lloyd Webber music in my collection here, and if it’s your first time on the site, find out why I’m posting a tune a day here.

Sun and Moon
2 Feb 2017 2010, 2017 E major, favourites, Miss Saigon, musicals, show tunes, songs from the shows 0

Sun and Moon

Mark

Song 33:365 is one of my favourite songs to play: Sun and Moon from the musical Miss Saigon. It’s a duet performed by American GI Chris as he falls in love with Vietnamese bargirl Kim and the orchestration of this song from the show is wonderfully ethnic with pentatonic overtones. I’ve tried to capture this in my performance.

There are more songs from Miss Saigon in my collection, and if you’d like to know why I’m posting a song every day, click here.

You’ve Got a Friend
1 Feb 2017 2010, 2017 1970s, A major, ballads, Carole King 0

You’ve Got a Friend

Mark

It’s time for song 32:365, the first song of a new month, and today I’m playing Carole King’s You’ve Got a Friend, dating from 1971. This classic song won Grammy Awards for Carole King (Song of the Year) and James Taylor’s version won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. It has been covered by many artists including Dusty Springfield, Michael Jackson and McFly. And now me!

I hope you enjoy this one. There’s more Carole King on the site, and if it’s your first time here you can find out why I’m posting a song every day here.
