Strong

Mark

I’m running a bit late with today’s tune as I’ve had a very busy day! I’ve decided to play Robbie Williams’ Strong as my #365Song today. The original was released in 1998 and it’s hard to believe that was 17 years ago! Apparently Robbie sang Strong along with the crowd at Knebworth for the 2003 live album in an attempt to break the world record for the biggest number of people doing karaoke at one time!

Så Glad Som Dina Ögon

Så Glad Som Dina Ögon

Mark

This will rank among the less well-known of my 365 Songs collection! Så Glad Som Dina Ögon (“as happy as your eyes”) is a pre-ABBA song from 1972 by Agnetha Fältskog. Here’s a version of the original if you’re interested. I hope you enjoy something a bit different today.

Forever Like That

Forever Like That

Mark

While spending the day with a friend and colleague yesterday at a training course which involved a 2 hour car journey both ways, I was introduced to some great new music including this lovely song by American singer songwriter Ben Rector. It is indeed the perfect song for a first dance at a wedding:

Well I’ll be the words on the pages.
If you’ll be my sweet melody.
And the tune can keep changing,
cause I’ll keep arranging.
And this is the song that we’ll sing.

Here’s a performance of the original if you’re interested. I hope you enjoy my version.

Eternal Flame
11 Aug 2015 2015, Music 1980s, August, G flat major, pop, The Bangles 0

Eternal Flame

Mark

Today’s song is my version of Eternal Flame by The Bangles. One of the most well known ballads from the 80s (1988 to be exact), this song has been covered many times, including by Atomic Kitten in 2001 and – in French – by Bonnie Tyler and Laura Zen.

With Or Without You

With Or Without You

Mark

Today’s song is U2’s With Or Without You. It was voted “Best Single of 1987” by Rolling Stone magazine readers. I’ve decided to play it a bit differently and I hope you enjoy my version.

Best Of My Love

Best Of My Love

Mark

Inspired by our 70s evening with friends last night, today I’m playing the classic Emotions song Best Of My Love. First released in 1977, the song has made it to #87 of The Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Songs. I hope you enjoy my version of this disco classic!

Wherever You Will Go
8 Aug 2015 2015, Music 2000s, August, D major, pop, songs from films, The Calling 0

Wherever You Will Go

Mark

Today’s song is the brilliant Wherever You Will Go by The Calling. It topped the charts in the US and many other countries on its release in 2001 and a live performance by the band featured in Love Actually in 2003. An acoustic version by Charlene Soraia was used in the Twinings advert a few years ago. I suppose my version is a mix between the two – I hope you enjoy it!

What The World Needs Now Is Love

What The World Needs Now Is Love

Mark

Today’s song is the 1965 Hal David and Burt Bacharach song What The World Needs Now Is Love. It has been recorded by over 100 artists, notably Dionne Warwick, the Supremes and Cilla Black. I think my favourite version is by American jazz singer Stacey Kent – here’s a link.

When I Kissed The Teacher
6 Aug 2015 2015, Music 1970s, Abba, August, E flat major, E major, modulation 0

When I Kissed The Teacher

Mark

Today’s song is the 1976 ABBA song When I Kissed The Teacher. Often listed as one of Benny Andersson’s favourite ABBA songs, this song was the opening track on the Arrival album. It’s perhaps not the best-known of all the ABBA songs I’ve played so far, but I hope you enjoy my version.

A Pharaoh Story
5 Aug 2015 2015, Music 1970s, Andrew Lloyd Webber, August, B major, Joseph, show songs, songs from the shows 0

A Pharaoh Story

Mark

Today’s song is A Pharaoh Story from the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. First performed as a 15-minute cantata in 1968, Joseph was reworked into a longer show and became a full-length stage production in 1970, making it to the West End by 1973. It has seen many revivals and there is talk of a film version of the show, following the success of other film versions of musicals such as Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera.

The reason I’m playing this song today is that over the past few weeks I’ve seen many reports of a fantastic version of Joseph being produced by Centerstage, a local organisation who do fantastic work with performers young and not-so-young. It sounds like their very special productions of Joseph have been a huge success following their summer schools this year. Congratulations to Fiona and the team!

If it’s your first time on the site, find out more about the 365 Songs project or see all of my August songs here. If you’re looking for more songs from Phantom of the Opera and other musicals, have a listen to my Curtain Up album.
