Suite from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves

Mark

Today I’m playing my own arrangement of some of the music from the soundtrack of the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves written by Michael Kamen. I think the opening music in the film is one of the best film themes. My arrangement includes the Maid Marian theme which returned at the end of the film in the form of the classic Bryan Adams song Everything I Do (I Do It For You) which I played back in 2010.

I hope you enjoy this piece today.

You’re My World
3 Aug 2015 2015, Music 1960s, A major, A minor, August, Cilla Black, tribute 0

You’re My World

Mark

Today’s song is You’re My World by Cilla Black in honour of the singer and presenter who passed away at the weekend. It was originally written as Il Mio Mondo (My World) by Umberto Bindi and Gino Paoli and, despite not being a hit in Italy, it came to the attention of George Martin and he commissioned an English version to be recorded by his protégée, Cilla Black. On its release it went straight to #1 and stayed there for four weeks.

Apparently Elvis Presley was fond of Cilla Black’s recording and kept a copy of it in his personal juke box. When the Beatles visited him in 1965, they had an impromptu jam session with a performance of You’re My World in honour of Presley’s then wife, Priscilla Beaulieu.

We Have All The Time In The World

We Have All The Time In The World

Mark

We Have All The Time In The World marks the end of my James Bond week on 365 Songs. This classic song performed by Louis Armstrong featured in the 1969 film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service as a secondary theme, the main theme being an orchestral piece. Composer John Barry named this song as his favourite Bond composition, saying it was the finest piece of music he had written for a Bond movie, and also because it gave him the opportunity to work with Louis Armstrong. I hope you enjoy my version.

Goldfinger

Goldfinger

Mark

Today is the penultimate song in my Bond collection: Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey from the 1964 film of the same name, and it’s perhaps one of the most well-known songs from the history of Bond soundtracks. Like many of the theme songs, it uses musical elements of the main James Bond theme in between each chorus and verse.

You Only Live Twice
31 Jul 2015 2015, Music 1960s, B major, film songs, film themes, James Bond, July, songs from films 0

You Only Live Twice

Mark

This is one of the true classic Bond songs, with the melody line combining perfectly with the high string motif. You Only Live Twice was performed by Nancy Sinatra for the 1967 film and has since been covered by artists as diverse as Coldplay, Björk and Soft Cell! The string melody actually comes from Alexander Tcherapnin’s First Piano Concerto composed in 1919.

Today’s Bond song is the theme from Tomorrow Never Dies. It was performed by Sheryl Crow and received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Song in 1997. The song which finally won the Golden Globe was My Heart Will Go On from Titanic.

Live And Let Die

Live And Let Die

Mark

Continuing my James Bond week here on 365 Songs, today I’m playing the classic song from the 1973 Live And Let Die soundtrack. Written by Paul and Linda McCartney and performed by Paul’s band Wings, the song was the most successful Bond theme to date, reaching #2 in the Billboard charts. It’s undoubtedly one of the most well-known Bond songs, and also one of the trickiest to play!

James Bond Theme

Mark

Celebrating this week’s release of the trailer for the latest Bond movie, Spectre, I’ve decided to have a James Bond week here on 365 Songs! I’m starting with the famous James Bond Theme itself, written by Monty Norman. Over 70 cover versions of the theme have been recorded, and I guess this means there’s one more!
