Bang-A-Boomerang

Mark

With Bang-A-Boomerang I’m “returning” to ABBA today. It was recorded in 1974 for the ABBA album, but was then selected as a potential song for the 1975 Melodifestivalen in which the song representing Sweden in Eurovision is chosen. Having won the contest in 1974, ABBA did not want to take part, so they gave the song to another band managed by their producers Polar Music, Svenne & Lotta. The song was placed 3rd in the Melodifestivalen, went on to become a hit for Svenne & Lotta.

America

Mark

Today’s song is the Simon and Garfunkel classic, America, and it seemed appropriate to play this song on the 4th of July. It tells the story of young lovers hitchhiking across America and was inspired by Paul Simon’s 1964 road trip with his girlfriend.

I hope you enjoy this song. To hear more July songs, click here. If it’s your first time on the site, find out more about why I’m trying to record a piano tune every day here.

La Paloma

Mark

Today I’m playing a beautiful Spanish piece of music known as La Paloma (“the dove”). It was written by Basque composer Sebastián Iradier in 1863 after he visited Cuba and is in the Habanera style. Among many recordings of this song are English versions (called No More) by Dean Martin and Elvis Presley and the song entered the Guiness Book of World Records in 2004 as the song performed by the largest choir: 88,600 people joined together in Hamburg to sing it!

I hope you enjoy this piece of music today. To hear more Spanish music, click here. If it’s your first time on the site, find out more about why I’m trying to record a piano tune every day here.

The Maple Leaf Forever
1 Jul 2015 2015, Music B flat major, Canada, Canadian songs, July, special occasions, traditional 0

The Maple Leaf Forever

Mark

Today’s song is dedicated to all my Canadian friends and family as they celebrate Canada Day. The Maple Leaf Forever was written in 1867 by Alexander Muir. Inspired by a maple tree which stood opposite his house, Maple Cottage in Memory Lane and Laing Street in Toronto, this song became an unofficial anthem for English-speaking Canadians. There is still some controversy associated with the song apparently, since its original version was not popular among French Canadians. However it has been rewritten a number of times to incorporate words appropriate to both English and French-speaking communities in Canada, and I hope my choice of this song today is appropriate for everyone!

The Ludlows from Legends of the Fall

Mark

Named after the emigrant family featured in the film Legends of the Fall, The Ludlows is a beautiful piece of music which is very much in keeping with James Horner’s music from the film which earned him an Academy Award nomination. This is the final piece in my tribute to the composer who died last week in a plane crash.

All Love Can Be (from A Beautiful Mind)

All Love Can Be (from A Beautiful Mind)

Mark

Continuing my tribute to James Horner, here’s All Love Can Be from the film A Beautiful Mind. This haunting song was recorded by Charlotte Church for the film and she described it as one of the most haunting and beautiful songs she had ever performed.

To convey the beauty of mathematics, Horner focused on the idea of a kaleidoscope which constantly changes patterns, some patterns moving quickly and other patterns moving more slowly underneath. He conveyed this in the music with the chord progression and the build up of the counter melodies and harmonies. I hope you enjoy this lovely song.
