No Siento Penas

This is another of those songs that may not be very well known – Juanes’ No Siento Penas. It’s an album track from the very popular 2004 Mi Sangre album, but as soon as I heard the song I loved it. It has a very catchy, happy chorus and since the title of the song is “I have no regrets” (or more literally “I have no pain”) then it all seems to fit! I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)

If my arithmetic is correct, today is the 135th day of the year, and therefore this will be the 135th piano tune I’ve recorded in 2015. However, if you add the 365 pieces I recorded back in 2010, this will actually be the 500th piano piece I’ve published, and I’m celebrating with my version of the Proclaimers’ 1988 hit I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). This is very different from the original and I hope you enjoy it.

Con Los Años Que Me Quedan

I’m in Spain today, starting off a new video project, and I was thinking of a Spanish language song to play. I’ve ended up choosing not a Spanish song, but a US/Cuban song by Gloria Estefan, Con Los Años Que Me Quedan, “with the years I have left”. It’s a beautiful song in the bolero style with some fantastic chord progressions, and I hope I’ve done it justice. Here’s a live performance of Gloria Estefan singing the song if you’re interested. Her version is better than mine, of course!

I Have Nothing

Today’s song is Whitney Houston’s I Have Nothing from the 1993 Bodyguard soundtrack. I was reminded about this song by a young girl with a big voice singing it on Britain’s Got Talent a couple of weeks ago, so I thought I’d add it to my 365 Songs collection. I hope you enjoy it.

Babylon

A blast from the past today: it’s David Gray’s 1999 song Babylon. We used this song as a backing track on one of the early Partners in Excellence promo videos for our film-making weekends so it always conjures up happy memories of Scottish Outdoors Centres and all the fun of our foreign-language film-making with enthusiastic students. I hope you enjoy this piece.

The Phantom of the Opera

It has been a week of birthdays, and today’s song is the main song from the musical Phantom of the Opera and it’s dedicated to Louise who celebrates her birthday today! This song in the musical is sung by the Phantom and Christine as he escorts by boat to his lair in the lagoons beneath the Opera Garnier. At the end of the song, Christine sings her highest note of the musical, an E6.

Oh Happy Day

Today I’m playing the Gospel classic Oh Happy Day. This song is dedicated to my friend Sarah who celebrated her birthday earlier this week. It became an international hit in 1969 when the Edwin Hawkins Singers recorded their gospel version of an 18th century hymn. I hope you enjoy something a bit different today, and belated happy birthday to Sarah!

Stand By Me

If a song makes it to number 25 on the “top songs of the century” if must be pretty good, and that’s where Ben E. King’s Stand By Me ended up on the Recording Industry Association of America’s list for the 20th century. Ben E. King passed away this week and although I would have like to have played this sooner, I’ve been travelling and catching up with requests and other birthday dedications.

Stand By Me has been covered literally hundreds of times, but it first made it to the #1 position of the Billboard Top 100 R&B singles in 1960. On the release of the film of the same name in 1986, it re-entered the Billboard top 10, and made it to the #1 position in the UK charts in 1987.

There’s a lovely story about the recording of this song. Ben E. King had written it for The Drifters, but during a studio session for the recording of Spanish Harlem there was some time left over. The session producers, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, asked King if he had any other songs they could record. He played Stand By Me on the piano for them and they immediately called the session musicians back into the studio and ended up recording one of the most famous songs in history.

A few weeks ago, just before Ben E. King’s death, the song was inducted into the National Recording Registry by the US Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”. I hope my performance does this wonderful song justice.
