Gymnopédie No.1

I’m returning to classical music this morning with Eric Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 1. Published in 1888, this is the first of three Gymnopédies which are regarded as an important step towards modern ambient music. They went against many aspects of the classical tradition: this piece starts with two major 7th chords repeated, and in terms of structure it does not resolve to its main theme and ends unexpectedly. I hope you enjoy something a little different today.

If it’s your first time on my site, you can find out more about why I’m playing a tune every day here, and although we’re only just into a new month, you can check out my other May pieces here.
